Enhancing Visitor Experience at Wikipedia's Annual Event

The Client

Wikimania is the official annual event of the Wikimedia movement. Held in London’s Barbican Centre, Wikimania is a 2000+ person conference, festival, meetup, workshop, hackathon, and celebration. We were invited to showcase our innovation around location services at the Wikimania conference.

Imagine a World in Which Every Single Human Being Can Freely Share in the Sum of All Knowledge. #Wikimania2014

Our Role

Indoor & Outdoor Trail-Finding

The Barbican is Europe’s largest arts and conference venue. Our challenge was to provide a personalised tour of this vast space that seamlessly integrated both indoor and outdoor location points. We successfully implemented a physical beacon network around the Barbican and integrated it with GPS to support the outdoor points.

Wikipedia is a household name — in fact, it’s now one of the five most popular websites in the world, clocking over 21 billion hits every month.

Our Role

The Wikimania App

We developed a bespoke mobile application with a complex back end to support real time content updates in only 8 days. The application provided attendees with up-to-the-minute scheduling information and content about each session, pushed to the audience using beacon technology.

The age of context has only just begun.
